How a University Dropout Became Our Peer Mentor

Despite Being Labelled "Disturbed"

Atarah stood at Makerere University's gates, her dream degree in Social Sciences within reach. She had beaten the odds, secured her place, and held the dreams of her entire village in her hands.

But then, the noise started. The internal discord of a lack of focus, health challenges, and a spirit that everyone around her labelled as 'disturbed.' The noise became so loud that the music stopped. She dropped out.

"The noise inside my head was so loud, the music stopped. I dropped out of university."

We found her in a church choir. We brought her into LIQ MUSIC. We sat her at a piano. We put her through rigorous vocal training. Slowly, the 'disturbances' faded. She recorded her first songs. She started performing. She began to earn her own living. And then, the most beautiful harmony of all happened: She went back. She rejoined the University.

Today, she stands tall with her Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from Makerere—a graduate, a musician, and our Peer Mentor. She performs at school assemblies to inspire other at-risk youth, especially girls, proving that music can rescue anyone.
